Cocooned in the midst of Nature, The Kumaon Resort is an idyllic spot for a mountain getaway.
From minuscule rooms to extravagant suites, hotel rooms come in varying sizes and shapes. Located in Kesar Devi, above the city of Almora, in the vicinity of Binsar Wildlife Sanctuary, lies The Kumaon Resort.
A 375 kilometer drive from Delhi will lead you to this private mountain retreat situated in the heart of nature. As the walk through the hamlets practicing traditional agriculture and the forests crowded with Oak, Cedar and Rhododendron trees engage your senses; one cannot help but get distracted by the simple yet fascinating use of wood blended with the natural light of the resort’s interiors.
Designed by the award-winning Sri Lankan architects, Pradeep Kodikara, a disciple of Geoffrey Bawa and his partner Jineshi Samaraweera, the resort beautifully translates the ethos of tropical modernism into a unique mountain design. The property offers ten luxury suites, a library, a sun lounge and and a gourmet restaurant. The entire resort is constructed with sensitivity to their natural environment allowing its guests to immerse themselves in the vast expanse of its surroundings.
Rotating walls of glass maximize and frame views of the mammoth sized forest and mountain peaks that lie ahead. Nearly all elements of the construction are hand-made on site, with a particular emphasis on self-design and fabrication. To keep up the authenticity of the place and its weather, each room features its own ‘bukhāri’, a traditional wood-burning room heater. Open fireplaces are also thoughtfully placed in the library and lounge areas.
The location of the resort is one of its biggest attractions. The area around the Kasar Devi ridge is home to a unique, sacred and natural heritage. Ancient stone temple complexes dedicated to Uma and Shiva dot the various valleys.
The area is also home to a thriving leopard population. Varying altitudes support a variety of flora and fauna, and village trails allow guests to experience these elements up-close. The historical city of Almora is also known to attract artists, pilgrims, scholars and seekers for centuries – Swami Vivekananda, DH Lawrence, Timothy Leary and Bob Dylan, to name but a few.
